GAVIN THOMAS

This year’s One Summer’s Day festival will be hosted by its creator, Guildford-born singer, songwriter, and promoter Gavin Thomas, who has been involved in Guildford's live music scene for over thirty years. He has played his solo acoustic request nights in pubs, bars and restaurants in and around the town for the last three decades, and is now into the fifth year of his Songs From The Summer House gigs, broadcasting live from his garden every Tuesday night. Gavin set up Guildford’s first Open Mic Night at Beaver's Bar (the venue that he co-owned and ran in Jeffries Passage) in 1997, and launched / curated the 'Guildford Songwriters' sessions at The Electric Theatre in 2001/02. Twelve years ago Gavin launched the hugely successful GT Live Sessions, incorporating a set of top-quality open mic nights, showcase sessions, and charity festivals in Guildford. Gavin currently curates, hosts, and runs the sound desk for the critically acclaimed GT Live Showcases that have been taking place at The Britannia in Guildford every Wednesday night for the last nine years. Gavin’s main aim with these events is to provide a perfect sound stage for artists to perform original songs in front of an audience of like-minded souls who are there to listen! He also advises and promotes up-and-coming singers, song writers, musicians and bands from the local area, providing a safe platform for these new and developing artists to gain experience and exposure whilst performing in front of a supportive audience.

As well as performing his own ‘Gavin And His Guitar’ solo gigs, and curating the GT Live Showcases, Gavin is also involved in local charity work, using a set of annual concerts and festivals to raise money for local campaigns and causes. Over the last ten years, mainly due to the phenomenal success of the annual One Winter's Night concerts at Guildford's Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Gavin has raised over £100,000 for local charities, including Disability Challengers, Mind, Shooting Star Chase, Phyllis Tuckwell, Samson Centre For MS, Samaritans, Charlie’s Promise, and a variety of wards and units at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Gavin is very proud to be a trustee of the Guildford Shakespeare Company, and last year was thrilled to receive the Mayor's Award for Service To The Community. (June 2025)
